Transitional Housing ProgramChoices continues to commit to the youth in the community by offering transitional housing through our NEXT Choice housing program, which offers 7 rooms for rent in a structured program. There is case management, rules and expectations. Residents must fill out an application and go through an interview process before they are accepted into this program. This program is to assist youth with housing for up to 1 year and gain life experiences in a safe and supported environment.
Semi-Permanent Housing Program 2017In November 2016 CHOICES created a position for a Transitional Housing Manager. The purpose of this position was to assist the youth living in our transitional house, shelter and community to find long term housing. It was apparent at the beginning, that this journey would be a struggle.
In April 2017 CHOICES rented our very own apartment. This apartment was rented with the intention of subletting (with permission) to a youth who was employed, going to school and was just not able to meet the reference or credit check aspect. That youth who pays his rent on time, and still resides at that apartment, was the base of this program. In May 2017 CHOICES rented out a house and turned it into our Semi-Permanent house. The youth rent rooms and share the common areas. They meet with the Transitional Housing worker 1-2 times a month depending on their situation.
The rules are aligned with our Transitional House. The biggest difference is that youth do not have a time limit as to how long they can stay. Once a youths income exceeds 2000$ a month the Transitional Housing Manager will assist the youth with finding market rentals. In Aug 2017 we also acquired another house which is run the same.
The Semi-Permanent Program is currently housing 12 youth. CHOICES’ continues to look for innovating ways to end youth homelessness and looks forward to expanding this new program.
